The Change the Truth Annual Friendraiser/Fundraiser takes places each June in Kansas City. The first two years the event was held at the Screenland Theatre. In 2010, 2011 and 2012 the venue was the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center.
The centerpiece for all four fundraisers has been the exhibition and sale of artwork made by the children at St. Mary Kevin Orphanage. Drawings, paintings and dolls made from banana fiber have wowed throngs of supporters, many of whom have added these wonderful creations to their own art collections.
Documentary filmmaker and Change the Truth board member, Lynne Melcher, creates a film about the orphanage each year. Her movies debut at the fundraisers. She never fails to present the stories of our children in a poignant and profound way. Lynne’s films are regularly shown in film festivals and have received critical acclaim.
The “Kajjansi Marketplace” offers crafts from Ugandan markets, including beaded jewelry, woven baskets and hand-made scarves, as well as Change the Truth tee shirts, tote bags and note cards. (Some of these items are available from our online store. Click here to shop.)
The event is planned and staffed by a team of volunteers and is attended by close to 400 people each year. It’s a fun, family-oriented event which is open to the public and is free of charge. Food, entertainment, compelling art, compassionate people and thoughts of the children at the orphanage make this event one of Kansas City’s most popular summer activities.
